Your Malibu, Your Decision

The Rob Reiner-led team behind the “Your Malibu, Your Decision” ballot initiative submitted 2,312 voter signatures to the Malibu City Clerk’s office on Tuesday.

That number surpasses the minimum requirement by nearly 1,000 signatures.

Supporters of the “Your Malibu, Your Decision” initiative have been spotted around town in recent weeks collecting signatures from registered voters. If City Clerk Lisa Pope verifies the signatures and the minimum requirement is met, the initiative will be placed on the local November ballot.

The initiative would subject all major shopping center development and commercial or mixed-use construction over 20,000 square feet to a citywide vote if the project is out of conformance with city code. It would also place a 30 percent limit on the number of chain stores permitted to operate in Malibu shopping centers. “Essential” services such as groceries, banks and medical offices are excluded, among others.

Chain stores would be required to obtain conditional use permits from the city planning department and prepare a specific plan for parking and environmental impacts, among other considerations, under the initiative.

In existing shopping centers, the 30 percent limit would apply to spaces under 1,400 square feet. Schein said most local merchants do not need larger spaces.

If placed on the November ballot, “Your Malibu, Your Decision” would need 50+1 percent voter approval to be enacted.
