Sierra Club proudly endorses Jennifer de Nicola, Rick Mullen, Skylar Peak and Jefferson Wagner for Malibu City Council.
All four are strong environmental candidates, and we hope voters will choose three of these to serve Malibu and to be strong stewards of the land enjoyed not only by residents, but by millions of visitors to this beautiful treasure of the California coast.
While voters are allowed to cast only three votes in the November election, all four of these candidates are clearly head and shoulders above other candidates running for city council — in terms of environmental records combined with vision and commitments to retain Malibu’s natural and rural environment, and to protect this special place.
Our officials concluded the following from interviews, and from reviewing records and extensive questionnaires.
Jennifer deNicola, an effective advocate for protecting students and teachers from toxic chemicals at Malibu schools, is also committed to protecting Malibu from overdevelopment. Her state and national allies are assets that will help her meet environmental goals.
Rick Mullen, one of the strongest environmental protection advocates running, will be a steady and clear advocate for Malibu remaining true to the values of nature protection expressed in the city’s founding vision statement. His love of the ocean and land is evident, and his firefighter and neighborhood leadership experience are fantastic assets.
Skylar Peak’s leadership on the city council has been “stand-out” and emulated by others; especially important is his commitment to retaining dark skies in the Santa Monica Mountains, limiting fireworks that rain pollution from the sky and also harm marine life and wildlife, and his commitment to limiting development.
Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner is a legendary leader in Malibu. His creative style of searching for solutions, combined with his strong love of water, land and justice helped earn him this endorsement. He has long worked to protect ridgelines and canyons from overdevelopment and is committed to enforcing local pollution laws.
