Erik Burr, a Malibu native, passed away on Jan. 28 at his home in Rancho Palos Verdes at the age of 59. Burr was the son of the late Margaret and Henry Burr, and he grew up on Point Dume.

After graduating from Santa Monica High School, Burr earned an engineering degree from Stanford University and later received an MBA from UCLA. He joined Hughes Aircraft Company at the Malibu Research Lab where he met his future wife, Jane. Burr later moved to Hughes headquarters in El Segundo. There, he held a variety of management positions in the financial information systems division and continued with Boeing.

“Erik was a true child of Malibu,” family members said. He loved to hike the hills and ride his motorcycle on canyon roads. His love of the beach continued his entire life, as did his love of travel and exploration, whether it was a trip to Europe or a weekend road trip with his wife and children. A weekend of sailing in San Diego with family was one of his favorite pastimes, as were trips to the mountains for skiing and snowboarding. A fan of professional football, he considered that his “indoor hobby.”

He is survived by his wife, Jane Reed Burr; daughters, Erin and Allison; son, Erik Jr.; sisters, Marguerite Burr Tulloch (Frank) and Trish Burr (Bob Johnson); brother, Buzz.

“His passing leaves a gaping hole in the hearts and lives of those who loved him,” a family member said.
