David Caplan was born in Pittsburgh on January 22, 1946. He graduated from Penn State University and received his law degree from American University Law School in Washington, D.C. After law school, David drove across country to Malibu, where he first lived at the former Port of Paradise apartments. David spent the next 30 years in Malibu until 2002 when he and his wife Linda moved to Tucson.
David practiced law for several years. He then got his real estate broker license and syndicated several properties in the Malibu, Monte Nido and Agoura areas. In the early ‘90s, he received his securities broker license and began trading commodity options. His brokerage company, Opportunities in Options, grew to nearly 100 employees in Oxnard. David also authored several landmark books on options trading and gave educational seminars around the world.
He met Linda on a blind date in LA and they were married on January 27, 1973. They have two children, Daniel and Carole (wife of Dan Webb), and two grandsons, Lucas, 8, and Benny, 5.
David and Linda were original members of the Malibu Jewish Community Center, and were instrumental in its formation. David was on the selection committee of the Tucson Jewish Film Festival for 10 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed taking his certified service dogs to schools and assisted living facilities.
David was active throughout his life playing tennis at the Malibu Racquet Club, biking, hiking and horseback riding the Backbone Trail, skiing, playing paintball and practicing martial arts. He played duplicate bridge and competed in bridge tournaments.
“David will be remembered as having a unique personality and a great sense of humor,” a loved one said. “He was a loyal friend to many Malibuites, and above all a loving husband, father and grandfather.”
