Malibu Snowboarder Places 9th at Sochi Olympics

Malibu native Trevor Jacob, 20, is headed to Sochi, Russia to compete in the the Winter Olympics. 

Malibu native Trevor Jacob finished 9th out of 39 competitors in the Men’s Snowboard Cross Olympics event on Tuesday in Sochi, Russia. 

France’s Pierre Vaultier took gold in the event, followed by Nikolay Olyunin from Russia and American Alex Deibold. Jacob, 20, is the youngest member of the US snowboard team. In the snowboard cross competition, six competitors start at the top of a hill and race over a series of obstacles while trying to reach the finish line. The course is 1,250 meters with a 210-meter vertical drop and eight turn sections interspersed with jumps and rollers. 

The event was delayed from Monday until Tuesday because of heavy fog. Olympic officials were also forced to modify the competition format by cancelling the seedings run and heading straight to the elimination rounds.
