The Malibu High School girls’ varsity basketball team played two games on Saturday in the Fall High School Round Robin at Santa Monica College.
The Malibu Sharks were first defeated 36-23 by the El Segundo Eagles. Then, in an unusually low-scoring game, the Sharks rebounded by defeating the Santa Monica Vikings 26-20.
In the first game against El Segundo, co-Captain and All-League guard Danielle Bush led the Sharks in scoring with 11 points, and junior co-captain Hannah Robinson chipped in with six points.
In the second game against the Santa Monica Vikings, the Sharks’ freshman guard Helena Vazelakis led the team with 12 points. Forward Sierra Zontelli contributed strong rebounding and also made a critical free throw in the pivotal closing seconds. Bush was double-teamed throughout the game, and was held to seven points, the lowest point total in her two years.
“A bit less than an overwhelming start, but we’ve installed a new offense and it will take some time to get used to it,” Malibu Head Coach Andy Meyers said after the games. “They’re a wonderful group of girls and I have high hopes for them when league play begins in November. They sure are fun to watch!”
The Sharks will again play two games on Saturday.
