The body of a young whale calf was found washed up on the beach at Thornhill Broome State Park on Sunday, according to witnesses. State Parks officials were not able to confirm any additional information about the calf, but State Parks Angeles District Superintendent Craig Sap theorized the body most likely washed back out to sea.
Though no more details were available, it is the migration season for gray whales, which travel from Alaska to Baja California each winter from about January through March in order to give birth to calves before traveling back up north to feed, according to info from the National Park Service.
