A strong thunderstorm is predicted Thursday evening through Friday morning in the Malibu area, prompting a High Surf and Wind Advisory, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain is expected to make landfall as early as 4 p.m. and last through the evening. Around 10 p.m., the National Weather Service reports a 100 percent chance of a thunderstorm with rain expected to end around 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

In addition to the wet weather, a high surf advisory and a high wind advisory have been issued for coastal communities. The high surf advisory is in effect through Saturday afternoon with anticipated swells up to 12 feet. Strong rip currents will pose a hazard and beach-goers are advised to use caution near rocks and piers and swim near lifeguard towers. If caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore.

Winds could reach up to 50 MPH near the beach and up to 60 MPH in the foothills as the thunderstorm draws strength. The strongest winds are expected later in the evening and the advisory should lift around 8 a.m.
