Local nonprofit organization American Tortoise Rescue received a $2,000 grant from the Malibu Country Mart in observance of World Turtle Day.
Julie Labin, director of sustainability for the Country Mart, presented the check to the organization. Country Mart general partner Michael Kloss approved the donation when the nonprofit rescue organization partnered with Groupon for a successful grassroots funding campaign.
The funds will be used to build a sustainable vegetable garden to feed more than 100 turtles and tortoises at the rescue center.
The tortoise rescue group was cofounded by Marshall Thompson and Susan Tellem. World Turtle Day celebrates turtles and tortoises of all species worldwide and fights to save declining native populations.
