The following was a response to a May 3 letter from Susan Tellem.

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I have been away on business. However I am appalled by the use of the word “trash” to describe my new novel, “The 2000 N-I-G-G-A,” considering the fact you haven’t read a single page. In case you were wondering, the title was chosen based on the aptness of its subject matter. If you notice, the word N-I-G-G-A is separated by hyphens to indicate a pulling apart; a pulling apart of the word as well as the man, a homeless man at that. This is 2007. I thought that judging books by their covers had now become passé. My mistake. You are, however, correct in stating The Malibu Times is a family paper. It does not publish trash.
