On July 1, the minimum wage in Malibu will increase from $10.50 per hour to $12 per hour for employees of companies with 26 or more employees. Employees of companies with 25 or fewer employees will be affected for the first time by the City of Malibu’s Minimum Wage Ordinance, and will need to be paid a minimum of $10.50 per hour. The city’s ordinance applies to any employee that performs at least two hours of work in a particular week within the Malibu city limits, regardless of immigration or work status.
The minimum wage will continue to increase on July 1 of each year until it reaches $15.00 per hour. Companies with 26 or more employees will increase their minimum wages to $13.25 per hour on July 1, 2018 to $14.25 on July 1, 2019, and to $15 per hour on July 1, 2020. Companies with 25 or fewer employees will increase their minimum wage to $12 per hour on July 1, 2018, $13.25 on July 1, 2019, $14.25 on July 1, 2020 and $15 per hour on July 1, 2021.
Beginning January 1, 2022, Malibu’s city manager will determine the adjusted rates of the minimum wage based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which will become effective July 1, 2022.
According to the city’s website, the ordinance was established in March of last year in order to stay competitive in the job market with neighboring jurisdictions that had already passed $15 per hour minimum wage ordinances, which at that time included Los Angeles, Santa Monica and others.
Shortly after the Malibu ordinance was passed, Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law lifting the statewide minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2022 – just one year after all workers in Malibu are scheduled to arrive at $15 per hour.
