Bulldozers on Wednesday morning began leveling the outdoor space where Trancas Canyon Nursery and Sea Lily Malibu were housed at the Trancas Market shopping center.
Several buildings and non-native trees are set to be torn out as part of an ongoing construction project at the shopping center to make more space for remodels and new retail space.
Last week, Trancas Canyon Nursery and Sea Lily were moved to temporary trailers from which they’ll operate for four to five months.
Two new buildings will be built at the back of the property. Trancas Canyon Nursery’s current 125-square-foot building will be remodeled, developer Scott Rozier said, while Sea Lily will move into a new approximately 600-square-foot space. A third approximately 1,000-square-foot building will be built on the site for a new tenant where Sea Lily used to be housed.
Nursery co-owner Debbi Stone and Sea Lily owner Caytlyn McCloskey were looking forward to the new spaces, although they said it was difficult in the interim.
“I do think a lot of our customers who loved our property, it was very pretty, it was a very secret garden, and a lot of our customers are very upset that the whole thing is being bulldozed,” Stone said. “But who knows how long it would have taken if they had had to work around us. So it seemed like the best solution.”
