Commercial property owner Michael Koss, operator of the three Malibu Country Marts in the heart of Malibu, stated in The Malibu Times article titled “Water Board cites 38 Malibu businesses for violations,” that “I can’t spend millions modifying an old septic system when the whole plan is to change the system,” adding that there have never been any problems with the existing wastewater system.

Mr. Koss has received multiple Notices of Violation by the Regional Water Board since 2001 and I suspect the pollution problems from his Malibu Country Mart septic existed well before 2001, while his facility was not permitted. City Council members Sharon Barovsky, Andy Stern and John Sibert stated in recent local paper articles that it may take 3 to 7 years to build a centralized wastewater treatment system for the commercial property owners in the center.

Seems like the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing, but all agree that stupid, ignorant surfers, swimmers, fishermen and the 1.5 to 2 million annual visitors, who wish to share in the marine life in the heart of Malibu, should rot.

I’m glad the Regional Water Board is doing its job because I have to ask, where is the moral justification of Barovsky, Stern and Sibert when they refuse to stop polluters before promoting more development?
