Western Malibu was awakened to the sound of sirens and a sheriff’s helicopter this morning … and people in one neighborhood heard official announcements on a sheriff’s squad car speaker …. stay inside and lock the doors.
Burglars had been spotted inside a house on Sea Level Drive East … just below Broad Beach Road.
Sheriff’s deputies with flashlights searched gardens and the beach
Police dogs … a chopper and eventually a SWAT team was brought in.
One alleged burglar was arrested … but a seocnd had escaped into the predawn darkness.
After 4 hours of searching … the perimeter was withdrawn.
Like with al large scale events … rumors circulated.
Sheriff’s deputies say that shots were -not- fired.
But we don’t have the complete story yet … it’s still developing.
Tom Petty Mourned By Other Rock Giants
Malibu rock star Tom Petty died last night at 8:40 p-m.
The guitarist … composer … singer … died at U C L A Santa Monica Hospital.
He had suffered a heart attack at his home near Escondido Beach.
That was Sunday night at 10:46.
His family was with him at the hospital.
Tom Petty was low key in Malibu … like most rock stars who live here.
Petty had performed over three nights at the Hollywood Bowl a week ago… the end of a nationwide tour.
The trek marked the band’s 40th anniversary.
It was intended to be his “last trip around the country.” He told Rolling Stone.
But it wasn’t his intention to quit playing. “I need something to do, or I tend to be a nuisance around the house,” he told the magazine.
Says Bob Dylan .. in a statement … “It’s shocking, crushing news.
”I thought the world of Tom. He was a great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.”
Ringo Starr on Twitter … said “God bless Tom Petty… I’m sure
going to miss you Tom.”
Tweeted Stevie Van Zandt:
“Man this cannot be happening. Not Tom Petty please. Our deepest love and condolences to his family and band. A brother and true believer.”
In the late 1970s, Petty’s romanticized tales of rebels, outcasts and refugees dominated the pop charts.
Rolling Stone’s critics said his voice was filled with a heartfelt drama that perfectly complemented the Heartbreakers’ ragged rock & roll.
Songs like “The Waiting,” “You Got Lucky,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Learning to Fly” and “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” all dominated Billboard’s rock chart, and the majority of Petty’s albums have been certified either gold or platinum.
Jeff Lynne bumped into Tom Petty at a traffic light in the 1980s.
That conversation turned into the formation of th Traveling Wilburys … a fun little rock band with a few guys playing anonymously.
Guys like Tom Petty … Jeff Lynne … Paul McCartney … George Harrison … Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan.
His most recent release, Hypnotic Eye, debuted at Number One in 2014.
Petty also recorded as a solo artist and as a member of the Traveling Wilburys and Mudcrutch … was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
No services have been announced.

Big Fire Alarm, Small Fire

The first unit in found the fire out on arrival.
Everyone else was slowed down and turned around.

Overnight Beach Curfews In Danger, Coastal Wants Max Beach Access
The city of Los Angeles may lose its ability to close beaches at midnight.
This might affect Malibu as well.
For thirty years … the City of Los Angeles has closed its beaches from midnight to 5 a-m.
But a lawsuit brought by homeless advocates is challenging that … they say the California Coastal Commission has not given permission for the closures.
A Superior Court judge … and then a Court of Appeal panel … rejected the city’s position and says the state Coastal Commission does have jurisdiction.
The Coastal Commission has challenged the beach closures … and has demanded that the city show “credible evidence” of a current safety threat.
L.A. adopted its curfew in 1988 to deter late-night crime … according to the L-A Times
L-A has just settled the lawsuit … and it will now take its overnight beach closure to the Coastal Commission.
How does this affect Malibu??
First … L-A’s jurisdiction includes stretches of P C H in Pacific Palisades.
And … Malibu does not have any ordinances that close its beaches at night.
The city relies on county beach or state beach rules … and those agencies might get dragged into this.
Coastal Commission staff members in the past have indicated they were open to a compromise that would relax the total ban without threatening public safety.
But an enforcement officer for the state tells the L-A Times …. they “start from the position of maximum public access to the coastline.”
