Chocolate and other flavored milk may not be on the menu at Malibu schools when the next school year starts. After half a dozen parents protested the high sugar content of flavored milk at the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education’s regular meeting Thursday night, the board agreed to consider at its first meeting in July whether to limit or ban the serving of flavored milk in all district schools.
Also, superintendent Tim Cuneo publicly apologized at the meeting for not notifying the mother of a boy who suffered from a hate crime at Santa Monica High School until more than a month had passed. Victoria Gray spoke about how her son, who is black, was tied up to his locker by white teammates on the wrestling team, and a noose was placed nearby. School district officials did not notify her of the incident, nor did her son, and she said at the meeting that she found out through other parents.
The board agreed to consider revising the district’s hate crimes policy to include more strict rules regarding notification to parents.
