Our Lady of Malibu School students experienced life aboard a trading ship in the 1830s.

Our Lady of Malibu School 4th and 5th graders embarked on an excursion to the Ocean Institute-Tall Ships in Dana Point on Jan. 21. The students served as “greenhands” on a replica of the Pilgrim trading ship, which left Boston to trade goods for cowhides at the California missions.

“Working together in three crews, the students braved cold, wind, rain and hail to perform a variety of tasks, including raising and lowering a sail, and hoisting and maneuvering a cargo barrel around the deck,” office manager Lisa Hall wrote to The Malibu Times. “In spite of the harsh weather, the vast majority of students said they would gladly serve again as crew members.”
