Golf cart dangers

I want to complain about the parents who allow their underage kids to drive around Point Dume in electric golf carts. The other night I was standing in a parking area when a cart with four kids riding in it suddenly came out of nowhere and nearly struck the person I was standing next to. It should be noted that the kids looked like they were under 16 years of age (too young to get a driver’s license) and the cart had no headlights. Moreover, because of the electric motor it was relatively silent. This is a recipe for a potential tragedy, since I have seen many of these kids drive these carts pretty recklessly. Parents who purchase these carts for their kids should know that they are still bound by the laws in the California Vehicle Code with regard to the use of motorized vehicles on public streets.

Electric golf carts are not exempt from these laws. Parents should also know that any accident which results from their children’s negligence while operating these carts will result in the parents being personally liable for the damages as well.

I would also like to see the Sheriff’s Department step up to the plate and enforce the law here. You should not be allowed to drive a motorized vehicle (electric or otherwise) on a public street unless you are licensed, you drive responsibly, and your vehicle has proper safety equipment like headlights for nighttime use. Point Dume parents, wake up!
