Airing of concerns helps

I attended and testified at the recent EIS/EIR hearing on the BHP Cabrillo project and I must say that I was very encouraged by the turnout in the community. I was very impressed with how many Malibu citizens have valid concerns regarding alternative energy sources and their impact on our environment. I am thankful to the State Lands Harbor Commission, the Coast Guard, and Billiton for holding such a hearing. At such a critical stage of the project, it is reassuring to know that the community can address concerns directly to the key figures.

By the same token, I was also equally impressed with BHP’s willingness to hear out those concerns expressed by our neighbors. Given the cooperation demonstrated at this meeting, I would encourage BHP to continue to listen to the community throughout the remainder of the process. Now that they have had a chance to hear our concerns, I am confident that every effort will be made by our elected city officials to ensure that BHP is in compliance with those requests. I am very hopeful that this process will result in a beneficial outcome for all those involved.
