In response to “Malibu developers file federal suit against Measure R:” Two sentences in your excellent article stood out for me. They are quotes from David Waite, the attorney who filed the suit for Steve Soboroff and his fellow developers (I have added my own single quotation marks and translations):
“Under the provisions of this misguided measure, developments are no longer subject to any standards other than the ‘whim of the electorate.’ (Translation: Democracy.) In so doing, ‘Measure R divests the city’s elected leaders of their proper and lawful government functions pertaining to local land use and development’ (Translation: We won’t be able to bribe them anymore).”
The developers have revealed themselves for exactly what they are: a microcosm of what is currently going on at the federal government level: goodbye democracy, hello money.
