Letter: Time to Transfer

Letter to the Editor

It is with a heavy, yet relieved heart that I write to say [my husband] and I have decided to transfer [our son] out of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District beginning in August 2014.

The easiest and clearest way to explain our decision is the following, yet I will speak for myself going forward: Of the many priorities I have as a mother, two of the most important are 1. the safety and well being of my children and 2. they get a proper education. I have spent many sleepless nights during the past school year wondering if I have endangered my son by sending him to Malibu High/Middle School and frustrated over the constant disruption to calm, centered learning time. His classes were relocated to the Methodist Church for instrumental music and to Juan Cabrillo for humanities and perhaps math and who knows where else over the course of the school year.

In good faith, I do not believe, nor do I have confidence that the issues will be resolved in a timely and appropriate manner and I am not willing to sacrifice [my son’s] education in the fight. My trust in the SMMUSD School Board, Superintendent Sandra Lyon and Malibu City Council have eroded away and I do not believe that they have the best interest of our children or the teachers and staff in mind. It is my hope that a resolution to this issue is found and we can one day return to MHS. Until then…
