Hopping mad

A fire was started on Latigo Canyon last Wednesday by a welder without appropriate permits. This despite The Malibu Times’ continued reporting of this year’s high fire threat to Malibu and its citizens. One must take pause to consider what would possess a human being to endanger the lives of our citizens, firefighters, children and animals in what they know to be a high fire zone during a drought. Well, I am irate.

I contacted the fire department and will proceed to the Sheriff’s department to insist the stupid and dangerous persons are cited to the utmost of the law. Apparently the threat of loss of life and limb and potential destruction of others’ property is simply not enough for some people to behave rationally and with human decency. Perhaps, and sadly, they can find their obligation to ensure the safety of the neighborhood after they pay through the nose like the rest us, had the fire gone out of control. A little public excoriation wouldn’t hurt to drive home the point either. The violators should be ashamed and effusively apologetic to those of us they damn near killed. What decent person wouldn’t be?

If the responsible party is reading, I would like to let him know that I have enough of a battle with my neighbors on Hillview Drive and their insistent parking without compunction on our 12-foot easement blocking access to the fire hydrant that puts out those same neighbors’ homes. Homes, which I might add, may still have their children inside! I will not endure that battle coupled with a neighbor hell bent on burning down the whole damn mountain.
