FLY ME TO THE MOON

It was a sellout under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl as thousands turned out to hear one of popular music’s living legends. Anthony Dominik Benetto, aka Tony Bennett, wowed the crowd with a string of signature songs like “Smile,” “New York State of Mind,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “The Way You Wear Your Hat” and “Let’s Face the Music and Dance.”
The celebrated crooner was accompanied by a talented combo comprised of musicians Lee Musiker on piano, Paul Langosch on bass, Gary Sargent on guitar and Clayton Cameron on drums.
The two-hour performance delighted a diverse group of fans ranging in age from 9 to 90-and if applause ovations were any indication, the evening was solid gold.
GETTING IN TUNE
Laura San Giacomo of “Just Shoot Me” and Screen Actors Guild prez Melissa Gilbert helped orchestrate a memorable musical afternoon at Pepperdine University. The two stars agreed to lend their ears to a talented group of promising musicians.
It was all part of the university’s annual summer camp for the Young Musicians Foundation. Every year, the instrumentalists participate in an intensive 10-day classical jam under the baton of Lucas Richman, who conducts the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
“Lucas has been so supportive,” explained YMF’s Audrey Henderson. “He comes here every year and gives the kids intensive professional training. It’s a great opportunity to be with other kids who are just so passionate about music as they are. It’s such a wonderful experience for everyone.”
Enrollment is limited to 65 musicians and each performer is hand-picked by a selection committee.
“They go through a demanding audition,” said foundation director Edye Rugolo. “Although they come in with great ability, it’s amazing to watch them learn and grow.”
The group wrapped up their camp with a grand finale at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre. With continued practice, who knows-their next stop could be Symphony Hall.
REEL ESTATE
Don’t be surprised if you find yourself at the Ralph’s express lane with one of America’s sweethearts. Pretty woman Julia Roberts and hubby Danny Moder have been eyed doing some local house hunting and might soon make a move to Malibu.
Now that the two have tied the knot, they’re reportedly ready to flee Moder’s bachelor digs and make their nest at a new seaside retreat. According to pals, Malibu is a front-runner on the location list. After all, it’s the place where Roberts recently celebrated her birthday with a splashy beach bash, which included mega-producer Joe Roth as well as many of her “Ocean’s Eleven” co-stars. Stay tuned…
