Scott Nelson Winner, carpenter and lifelong resident, died Dec. 1. He was 59.

Winner was born on July 8, 1951 in Santa Monica. He grew up on La Costa with his older brother Mike. Winner attended Webster Elementary School, Malibu Park Middle School, Santa Monica High School and Santa Monica College.

He was also a well-known local carpenter, and used driftwood to create bed frames, bookcases, tables and climbing structures for Malibu Methodist Nursery School.

Winner enjoyed kayaking, fishing, surfing, camping and many other outdoor activities. He also enjoyed cooking and spending time with his children, Daisy, 18, and Jackson, 17.

“Dad really loved Malibu,” Jackson said.

Daisy and Jackson remember their dad as focused, intelligent, creative and artistic. Their father taught them to play the guitar and appreciate music and passed on his infinite knowledge of carpentry to Jackson, who was his job site helper in recent years.

Winner is survived by his brother Mike, of Las Vegas, his children Daisy and Jackson, of Malibu, their mother Aimee and countless friends on land and in the sea. A memorial will take place Dec. 28 at 10 a.m. with a paddle out at the Bluewater cul-de-sac on Westward Beach.

A custodial account has been established for his children. Donations can be sent to the Daisy and Jackson Winner Fund, c/o Kay Gabbard, 5466 Horizon Dr., Malibu, CA 90265.
