A 16-year-old male climber suffered back injuries Sunday afternoon after falling 30 feet into a rock pool water area at Malibu Creek State Park in Calabasas, according to the Malibu Search and Rescue Team.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department, Malibu Search and Rescue Team and State Parks workers responded to the scene at 3 p.m. and helped stabilize the Westlake Village resident for transportation to a local hospital.

“He was … packaged by rescue personnel with full C-spine precautions and then placed in the Sheriff’s Malibu Search & Rescue litter and carried out of the back country area by the team, to an awaiting ground ambulance,” according to a release from the Search and Rescue team.

Because of its popularity among hikers and climbers, Malibu Creek State Park is also prone to a high number of rescue calls annually, according to officials.

Before setting out on a hike, authorities advise travelers to fill out a “Hiking Plan Sheet” and give it to a loved one or acquaintance in case someone on a hiking expedition is injured or lost.
