Letter: Improving the Schools

Steve Uhring’s letter, “Malibu High History,” Sept. 4, tries to find a villain where none exists. There is not, and never has been, a secret plot to hide toxins at Malibu High School (MHS). The country has known for decades that PCBs and other toxins are in building materials that were used in schools. SMMUSD has been working for years to remove toxins from our schools, most recently with BB. Asbestos, PCB filled light ballast, toxic soil and other materials have been removed from our schools publicly over many of the last few years.

Given recent letters from current leaders of Malibu Township Council, it would seem that they no longer support this agenda.

If you want a true history of what has occurred regarding MHS, please review the public record and you will see time and time again, Malibu Township Council, and now Malibu Community Alliance (MCA), has delayed, misdirected and impeded the approval and commencement of the BB project.

Malibu, if we are truly interested in cleaning up our local schools, MCA needs to drop its appeal of the BB project. This will allow temporary classrooms, the continued removal of PCBs, improved traffic circulation and other much needed improvements for our school.
