I am frequently asked about adult soccer in Malibu and in view of your recent mention of Malibu United, feel some clarification is warranted. First, I would like to congratulate Malibu United for winning the First Division title
of the Tri-County Soccer League. It was a valiant effort and a well-deserved finish to their hard fought season.
That said, I believe some facts should be put forth that relate to the beginning of the team in 2000 as stated in your article, since it actually started in 2002. To do this some background is needed. I formed The Malibu Soccer Club at Pepperdine University in 1977 with several students, graduate students, alumni and members of the community. We have been active since that time with both a Premier and First Division team in the Tri- County League. In the late 90’s, Mr. Whalen, Simpson and Page were invited to join the teams and they played for us for several years. It wasn’t until preparing for the 2002-2003 season when I was surprised to learn that a Malibu United team had been in the works. To keep things running smoothly for the players I let them call the Malibu Soccer Club teams Malibu United for that season, signing an agreement relating same. At the end of that season, it was apparent there were different philosophies of how to run the club business and the Malibu Soccer Club went on its own again with United gaining most of my players as a result.
They later dropped the
