The Malibu Stage Company, in conjunction with the evening’s artistic director Kristine Clark, benefactor Richard Carrigan and the City Parks and Recreation Department, presented, on the night of the 2003 November full moon, an evening of Chumash storytelling, music and dance. “The Night of the Coyote” was performed by, among others, Julie Tumamait, Dennis Garcia, Gilbert Unzueta, Redstar and Mati Waiya, with whom I had the privilege to serve with on the first Cultural History Study Group within the City of Malibu.
These Chumash have kept their culture and traditions alive. As we were told that evening, it was through their stories that we would get to know their rich history which is part of the history of Malibu. This history should be honored and respected by all of us. I hope there are many more performances such as this one so that we as a community will share a greater appreciation of the people who lived here before us.
