Investing in schools

Election day is near and there are many political contests and measures vying for our attention. None is more important to Malibu than Measure EE.

Malibu schools are on a roll with excellent test scores, an outstanding administration and dedicated teachers. We run our schools with a fiscally responsible budget and, in spite of rising costs, we have continued to provide a first class education for our children. That translates into rising property values for our residents. A vote for measure EE will give us the opportunity to move forward to ensure continued access to challenging course work, enhanced music, arts and athletic programs, upgrades of technology and improvement of academic and counseling services, all within a safe environment for our children. Measure EE also provides a plan to ensure that these funds will be used as promised. Public hearings will be held to outline plans for the money and an Independent Financial Oversight Committee will review the district’s compliance with the terms of this measure.

Measure EE is a parcel tax that will provide $9.2 million in funding for the Santa Monica-Malibu School district each year for the next 12 years. Without Measure EE, our schools will bear the brunt of our state’s budget crisis. It will start with a $5 million cut next year resulting in the elimination of some AP courses, music and art programs, many student sports, guidance counselors, assistant principals and an increase in class sizes. These are not just idle threats. This will happen.

Our children attend some of the best schools in the state and the country. Let’s keep it that way and build from here. Measure EE is the best investment we can make in our children’s future and the future of our homes, businesses and community. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 5. Please do not forget to vote and remember that voting is not only our privilege, but also our responsibility.
