The Malibu High School varsity boys water polo team recently completed a successful summer season and hell week in preparation for the upcoming season.
During the summer, the water polo team competed in two tournaments and played against a wide variety of strong club teams from all over California. At the Arroyo Grande Tournament near Pismo Beach July 14-15, the Sharks finished in fifth place, beating Righetti, Paso Robles and Santa Ynez. The team lost to Clovis West and Cuesta College, which both made it to the finals.
At the Santa Monica Tournament July 6-8 the Malibu boys tied for second place. They beat Culver City, El Segundo and Westside, and lost to Santa Monica and Mira Costa.
The team’s regular season got under way with “hell week” Aug. 13-21, which required six hours of practice per day.
“[We had a] great turnout for hell week,” coach Mike Mulligan said. “The boys worked really hard during swim sets and leg drills. Team chemistry is really strong.”
The MHS boys water polo teams host their first home game of the season Wed., Sept. 12 against Notre Dame High School. The varsity game starts at 3:15 p.m., followed by JV at 4:15 p.m.
