Vote NO on Measure R!!!!! That is what the Malibu Township Council’s Board of Directors is advising its membership. Malibu voters have approved two previous parcel taxes (Measures S and Y) to provide funds for our schools deemed necessary until 2009 and 2011 respectively. With proper management, this should have been enough. But due to the SMMUSD’s (Santa Monica/Malibu Unified School District) customary and predictable financial mismanagement, they now want us to vote to renew these parcel taxes IN PERPETUITY so they can continue to mismanage our money IN PERPETUITY! They claim in their glossy ads that this is not a new tax, that it is simply renewing two existing taxes (S and Y). But if the old taxes are expiring, it IS a new tax. And please note, not once do they mention how much the tax is! That is because, at $346 per household, it is MORE than the two expiring taxes combined! AND it is subject to inflation every year, AND renters get off scott free which is why Santa Monicans for Renters Rights have thrown their considerable support behind the Measure!!!
We encourage every voter to read the text in your sample ballot and to resoundingly defeat this insulting proposal. VOTE NO ON R.
Not surprisingly, we DO wholeheartedly support the move to create a separate Malibu School District. This is a no-brainer. We have suffered under the SMMUSD long enough. We pay approximately 30% of the current property parcel taxes but get back less than 20% for our schools (if we’re lucky!). And the SMMUSD is presently trying to cut our allocation of funds even further. A separate Malibu School District is a must!
