Watch out for moldy hay, even in the summertime.
Our neighbor in Topanga told us to try the three-way mix from a feed store in Agoura. We had it delivered in August but noticed some black stems. Unfamiliar with the mixture, we pulled out some of the black hay just to be safe. After all, how could it be mold in August? But then we noticed the horses getting sick. The vet came out and told us that it looks like they may have ingested a toxin. We showed our neighbor the hay and she said that was not the hay she had recommended and that the black stuff was, in fact, mold.
I urge residents that buy hay in Agoura to check their hay carefully for mold, even in August.
