Non-voters chastened

I would like to thank everyone who voted last April 11. I especially want to thank the volunteers to my campaign who worked very hard and, despite some of the tactics used by one of my opponents, made sure that the campaign was a clean one. I would also like to thank campaign watchdog Robert Stern for rising above the biases shown by his predecessor and conducting his job in an even and fair manner. I would like to thank the Malibu Township Council, the Point Dume Community Association, the Paradise Cove Homeowners Association and the Realty Board for putting on forums that helped inform the public. I appreciate very much the citizens who took the time to call me or stop me to ask questions about the issues facing Malibu.

I also would like to warn the 69 percent of the voters who did not vote that Malibu is a special place that will not exist in the future unless you care enough to vote. Special places take special effort. All politicians are capable of hubris. Remember that the night before the election the city council appointed a new city manager without even waiting a day to see if the voters wanted new input. The fact that the winners were elected by the vote of only one out of ten Malibu residents should be a warning to all who did not vote that the Malibu we know and love is being neglected.
