The Junior Varsity football Sharks of Malibu High continued their winning ways on Friday in a game against Rosamond High School, hanging on for a 21-20 victory. This marks the first time that any Malibu High football team has won three consecutive games.

Led by star running back Miles Edman, the Sharks were able to run up a 21-6 lead at halftime, with Edman running for 159 yards on only 15 carries in the first half. Edman ended the game with 212 rushing yards, marking the fourth consecutive game with over 200 yards rushing. Quarterback Garrett Brizendine played another solid game including a nine-yard carry for a touchdown in the second quarter.

The Roadrunners of Rosamond came out in the second half, charged up, and were able to close the gap to one point with 4:41 remaining in the game. The Sharks held onto the ball with a series of runs until the clock ran out.

In the evening game, the Sharks’ Varsity team was unable to post their first win of the season, losing to the Roadrunners 29-0. The team continues to show promise, however, having played their first four contests against highly ranked teams.

With relatively few Varsity players, the Sharks seem ready to get on a winning track for the remainder of this season. Led by the hard play of Matt Nechak and Chris Lafotu playing both offense and defense, the future of the team looks bright. Punt and kickoff return man Jason Puklus continues to rack up yards on long returns, while kicker/punter Jeff Spiegel is currently ranked 6th among punters in small schools, and set a school record last week by kicking a 47-yard field goal.

The Sharks’ next opponent is Aquinas, with the Junior Varsity playing on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and the Varsity game on Friday at 3 p.m. Both games will be played at Malibu High School.
