The phrase, “a picture is worth a thousand words” rang true on page A5 of your Sept. 16 issue!
I’ve been concerned about this project since I first heard of it-there has never been enough information available to the public about this proposed project.
I was directed to the following link: www.waterboards.ca.gov/losangeles/press_room/announcements/Public-Hearing-Malibu/FINAL%20DOCS/TM3%20-%20FINAL.pdf (page # is TM3-5 – technical memo #3, page 5).
The link leads to a Regional Water Quality Control Board report dated in November 2009, which shows a diagram locating wetlands in the lagoon. A green hatch marked area is shown (look in the area of the lagoon toward the left). This looks like one of the areas, which will be disturbed. This project will also affect the underground water table in the Serra Retreat area and Civic Center.
Dredging this area would be dreadful! I think there should be more information, more testing, more environmental reviews-and if a restoration is needed then let this be a community project led by environmentalists. This should not be a moneymaking project but a project done from the heart. The City of Malibu encourages community events-this could be one that will last forever-another legacy.
The approval for this project is set for mid-October. I encourage everyone to go to the site given-savemalibulagoon.com and find out what this proposal will really do, and voice your concern.
