Malibu Mayor John Sibert presents a city commendation to Caroline Pietrzyk for her CIF title.

Malibu High School’s championship boys varsity water polo team and coach Mike Mulligan were honored at Monday’s meeting, as well as MHS senior cross country star Caroline Pietrzyk.

The water polo team won the 2014 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) championship, beating Segerstrom of Santa Ana to clinch the title for the first time in school history.

“The team achieved its ultimate goal in 2014 by winning the tournament and being named CIF Division 6 water polo champions,” said Mayor Pro Tem Laura Rosenthal, reading from the official commendation.

City Councilmember Skylar Peak, himself a former MHS water polo player, took the opportunity to congratulate the team.

“The City Council congratulates each one of you gentlemen and all of your … coaches … and we wish you all success in the future,” Peak said.

Pietrzyk, who captured the 2014 CIF individual champion title in the state division and placed 14th in the national championship, also received a commendation from Mayor John Sibert at Monday’s meeting.
