In news from up the coast … a  federal judge in San Francisco says the embattled utility Pacific Gas and Electric paid huge dividends to sharehlders … and ignored tree trimming and other maintenance work to reduce wildfires.

Judge William Alsup said yesterday that “PG&E pumped out $4.5 million in dividends and let the tree budget wither.”

P G and E is in bankruptcy and faces charges it was responsible for the Cmap Fire in Paradise that killed 88 people.

This has direct impact on the utility that serves southern California … Southern California Edison … r.

The federal judge up north is still considering ordering further prevention steps, including requiring PG&E to shut power more often during high winds.

Southern California Edison is not in bankruptcy court … and has not been found guilty of criminal negligence…. both of which have been found for P G and E.

But state regulators will be applying new rules to both P G and E and Edison … and the financial health of the local utility is also largely dependent on how P G and E is treated.

Call it an earthquake drought.

Seismologists say it has been nine years since Southern California experienced its last earthquake of magnitude 6 or stronger.

And the Easter Sunday quake of 2010, and that shaker was actually centered across the border, causing the most damage in Mexicali.

Malibu sits on a series of faults that go along the coast … and just offshore.

Th e U S G S has said there is a nearly one on three chance of a magnitude 6.5 earthquake to occur on the Malibu Coast Fault over the next 30 years.

But it has been really calm on the California earthquake faults …

Experts know this calm period will eventually end, with destructive results.

They just don’t know when this well-documented geological pattern will shift.

Experts worry that memories of a truly destructive quake in many urban areas have faded.

And don’t forget …. earthquakes can cause fires.
