Help determine the future of Malibu by being an informed voter April 9. You can have a direct role in determining whether the City of Malibu council members reflect our community concerns and goals. This is certainly not the case with the California Coastal Commission (CCC) who are not elected, can’t be recalled and are not accountable to ordinary citizens.

Malibu elections are often determined by a few votes. Your vote can make a difference. You can choose between one so-called environmental candidate who embraces uncritically the CCC’s extremist plan for Malibu, or you can choose between two strong candidates, Sharon Barovsky and Andy Stern, who value our environment and have community track records of reasonable protection.

Unlike the CCC, these two strong candidates (among other good ones) favor reducing the Civic Center development and have acted to clean up Malibu Lagoon and Surfrider Beach. Unlike the CCC, they support continuing ESHA protection for Point Dume, and our special tide pools and coastal areas. Unlike the CCC, they are working for safe, convenient areas for coastal access. Don’t choose or allow the election of a candidate who, like the CCC, favors flammable coastal sage scrub over our Bluffs Park, cuts our mature “exotic” trees and landscaping from our homes, and doesn’t want to see gardens, vineyards, orchards, horses, security fencing in our yards or privately owned open spaces.

April 9 is a critical time for Malibu. Your vote counts. Don’t split the vote and allow a CCC ally to represent them at our City Council. Please consider voting for two reasonable, environmentally sensitive candidates who represent us well, Sharon Barovsky and Andy Stern.
