Antiwar cry resounds

It started for me when Rev. Larry Peacock of the Malibu United Methodist Church sent me an e-mail one month ago. He said, “I have been too publicly quiet about this war madness.” It struck a cord. He invited us to do a demonstration at Webb Way and Pacific Coast Highway. And so it started. I launched some e-mails and people pressed “forward.”

We began in small numbers meeting at Webb Way and PCH with our signs. A woman named Judy called me and said will you come to a meeting at Deidricks on Wednesday or was it Thursday. We have to do something. I said I would help. Others hopped on board and the e-mails flew and even though we are all busy with our lives, conflicting activities, conflicting jobs, conflicting families, conflicting you name it, we decided, like Rev. Larry, that we had been “too publicly quiet about this war madness.” Judy came up with a name–Malibu Citizens for Peace–not exactly inspiring, but it would do. We pooled our limited monetary resources and our energies to produce this Saturday’s “Imagine Peace Rally” and march in the grassy area in the Civic Center Courthouse complex, 23535 Civic Center Way, from 1-3 p.m. Others have come forward to offer help, support and thanks for our efforts.

Don’t thank us, just come on Saturday. Check out last week’s local papers or e-mail me at malibucitizensforpeace@earthlink.net to volunteer or for more information on the speakers. If you want to help, just show up at the display table a little before 1 p.m. on Saturday. Someone will surely put you to work. Preemptive war with Iraq may happen without U.N. Security Council consensus, but it won’t be without some hollering on the part of millions of people just like you and me exercising our patriotic duty to speak up about the country we love.
