Enjoy riders’ rights

Regarding J. Murphy’s opinion on sharing the road with cyclists.

I am a motorist and a cyclist in Malibu. I have no problem sharing the road with other automobiles, motorcycles and bicycles. The rules of the road for a cyclist are the same as for a motorist or a motorcyclist. All bikes have a right to a lane. It is out of courtesy that bicyclists ride to the right; it is not a legal requirement. Bicyclists are not required to ride single file, or off the main road, unless there is a designated bike lane.

Relax, J. Murphy, understand the rules of the road, stay off the horn, slow your pace on PCH, enjoy the view, and, if you get a chance, come ride with us. You will find that bicyclists are diverse and predominately really nice people.

The California State Vehicle Code, section 21200-21212, states that “every person riding a bicycle has all the rights and is subject to all the provisions applicable to the driver of the vehicle by this division.” It would be more interesting to have a forum on the creation of a designated bike lane on PCH. Wouldn’t it be great to heave fewer cars and more bikes in Malibu?
