Words of wisdom

Last Sunday I had the wonderful honor of attending the grand opening of the newly renovated Malibu Library. It was truly delightful to be part of the intense and heartfelt community support for this beloved institution.

For me, however, an unexpected highlight was my encounter with local civic leader, Steve Soboroff.

Samples of Mr. Soboroff’s celebrity typewriter collection were on display, including typewriters formerly owned by John Lennon, Dr. Jack Kevorkian (aka Dr. Death) and Ted Kaczynski (aka the Unibomber).

Mr. Soboroff was in attendance and we spoke briefly regarding his collection. I then asked Mr. Soboroff (who briefly had been employed by Frank McCourt) why he had not purchased the Dodgers baseball team. Mr. Soboroff’s immediate (and emphatic) response: “I’d rather buy typewriters!”
