Heal the Bay is hosting its annual Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 20 in an effort to clean California’s beaches, including those in Malibu.

Coastal Cleanup Day started in 1985, and each year volunteers at locations throughout California clean up trash and debris to prevent it from entering coastal waters and polluting wildlife and ecosystems. It’s one of the biggest volunteer days of the year, and city officials are urging the public get involved.

“As a surfer, I get to see our coastal water up close and personal all the time, so I know how important it is to the health of our ecosystem and of our community to keep Malibu clean and beautiful,” said Malibu Mayor Skylar Peak.

In 2013, more than 58,000 volunteers removed nearly 750,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California’s beaches, lakes and waterways. To sign up for one of the seven locations in Malibu, including Surfrider, Malibu Lagoon and Zuma Beach, visit healthebay.org. Cleanup efforts start at 9 a.m.
