Good morning Malibu!

——

Today appears to be the day that the bulldozers start in on the front of Malibu High School.

Demolition is supposed to start on the Administration Building today.

The old Building E classroom is already mostly gone.

Portions of the library have already bit the dust.

Imagine the thrill of being able to tear down the administration office at the high school … every teacher’s dream.

Firefighters needed a crane to rescue a man who fell from P C H onto the rocky shoreline at Deer Creek late yesterday.

The crane was brought in from the Oxnard fire Department … as paramedics from the Ventura County Fire Department attended to the victim.

P C H was down to one lane … for two hours … just west of Neptune’s Net.

An experienced ultralight pilot from just over the hill has been identified as the man who was killed after a two-person ultralight crashed into the ocean at Mugu Rock.

William “Bill” Watson … 56… is a husband and father of one from Agoura Hills.

Watson may have suffered a medical emergency in the ocean … after he and another man made a successful crash landing nine days ago.

There was an engine failure as the utlralight … one of three flying along the coast … had no place to set down.

The Acorn newspaper says Watson was swimming to shore when he began having problems …. he was pulled to shore and given C P R but died.

As most Malibu residents know … Malibu is shielded most nights from light pollution by the mountains and the sea.

But Malibu’s nights are not as dark as they used to be … and the city is drafting a Dark Skies ordinance.

After a pair of public meetings earlier this summer … Malibu residents have asked the city to refine the ordinance …. which is aimed at preserving Malibu’s outdoor environment from intrusive lights.

Tonight … the city Planning Commission will go over the proposed changes.

These changes include clarifying how existing lights would be covered by the dark skies ordinance.

Residents have also asked that residential properties along Pacific Coast Highway be covered by the ordinance …. instead of getting an exception because of street lights.

The ordinance would ban the lighting up of the ocean … beaches and canyons at any time.

The city Planning Commission will go over this tonight at 6:30 at City Hall.

Add this to your list of environmental concerns.

Water softeners.

With an eye on the upcoming activation of the city’s sewer plant … the city is worried about water softening devices.

These contraptions make water softer by removing salt and other minerals.

Every once in a while … some models of them clean themselves and send a slug of very salty water down the sewer pipes.

And if that goes into the sewer system … or into the groundwater … that’s a big problem.

City staff is recommending the use of certain types of water softeners.

Not all water softeners would be banned … only the ones that release salty water into the ground or sewers.

There’s a special meeting on that … a city council subcommittee … today at 11 at City Hall.

Yet another parking issue at Nobu.

This time … it’s the Nobu Ryokan hotel …. the fancy 17-room hotel where prices start at 11 hundred dollars a night.

The city of Malibu has issued a cease and desist order … against the hotel … because it is offering guests use of a lap swimming pool.

The pool is actually next door … at the old Tidepool office building.

The owners of the ffancy hotel say the have a legal right to use the pool … the city says calling the Tidepool building an office with a private health club would require more parking … and therefore it’s not legal.

Negotiations continue between the city and the adjacent Nobu restaurant and Soho Club Beach House … which have complicated parking-related problems with city rules as well.

The city has told Nobu that it might get its operating permits yanked if it continues to overload P C H with parked cars.

The Nobu Hotel matter goes before the city Planning Commission tonight.

Malibu resident and transgender activist Caitlyn Jenner is eyeing a Senate run in California.

Speaking on a podcast hosted by a right wing New York mayoral candidate … Jenner said she is considering running for the seat now held by Dianne Feinstein.

Her term is up in 2018 … she has not said if she will run for reelection.

Feinstein turned 84 this summer.

Jenner has been Donald Trump supporter … likely would run as a Republican.

Jenner came out as a transgender woman in 2015.

She has criticized Trump for ending an Obama-era directive to allow transgender students access to public school bathrooms of their chosen gender.

“From one Republican to another, this is a disaster,” she said in February.

In a recent USA Today interview … Jenner said she is on the Republican side.

Quote … “I have conservative views. But I’m also trans

“ Jenner said.

“I would much rather convince Republicans to do better with (LGBT) issues than to try to convince Democrats to lower taxes and have less regulations and less government.”
