Environmental activist Laurie Newman has been named the new president of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation. She was elected by the foundation’s board to take the position.
Newman played a role in formulating the original legislation that created the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission in 2002. She also worked for California State Senator Sheila Kuehl for 14 years.
“I’m honored and excited to elevate my involvement with the SMBRF,” Newman said in a statement. “I have been involved with the Bay Commission since 1995. I am so proud to see the growth of the organization, one that has always been about bringing stakeholders together to clean up local waters.”
The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation is a nonprofit environmental group that was founded in 1990 and aims to “restore and enhance” the Santa Monica Bay and other local coastal waters. It is the nonprofit partner of the Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission.
