Big Rock area fire greatly damages home under construction

A Friday night fire caused more than $3 million in damage to a 5,200-square-foot home that has been under construction on Rockport Road for several years. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Capt. Bob Goldman from Malibu Fire Station No. 70 said the station received a call about the fire at 7:30 p.m. The fire fighters managed to contain the fire in the second story of the house, Goldman said.

There were no reported injuries from the fire.

Power line collapses cause Topanga street closure

A car crash on Topanga Canyon Boulevard near Pacific Coast Highway last Thursday evening caused a few power lines to collapse. The road had to be closed in both directions because the lines had fallen onto the road. It was not reopened until Friday morning.

Malibu beaches unhealthy, environmental group says

According to Heal the Bay, some of Malibu’s beaches are in violation of federal standards and pose a health risk to people who visit them. The locations are Marie Canyon at Puerco Beach, Dockweiler Beach at Ballona Creek and Surfrider Beach at the breach point of the Malibu lagoon. According to Heal the Bay, those beaches were found to be polluted beyond what is allowed by the Clean Water Act.

“We urge responsible coastal cities and L.A. County to protect public health by immediately posting warning signs at the beaches,” said Heal the Bay Executive Director Mark Gold, “to come forward with plans to clean up these beaches and do everything possible to comply with the law as soon as possible.”

The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board will vote in September on water quality standards for the region that, if violated, could lead to fines for the cities in which those beaches are located.
