Life is not a box of chocolates, it is more like a jar of jalapenos. What you say today might burn your behind tomorrow.

I respectfully thank the entire City of Malibu for unanimously voting me an esteemed Malibu Tile, the highest award the city can give to one of its citizens. I must thank Councilperson Joanne House for nominating me. As I read about the Malibu Council meeting in your weekly, I was saddened by a public remark made by Councilperson Sharon Barovsky, but cheered by her vote. It is reported that Barovsky stated, “Mr. Fakehany fought cityhood, fought the parks bond and I have a sneaking hunch did not march for women’s rights.”

Mrs. Barovsky, I did not publicly clash with cityhood. I was nameless when this city was fashioned. It is the frolics of the City of Malibu that gave life to my commentary. It is Jack Corrodi who ran for city council on the slate which stated that, if elected, he would abolish the city and return it to the control of the County of Los Angeles. Corrodi was a man of insight. As president of the Lily’s Caf Coffee Group, Lily’s curmudgeons did fight the Parks Bond issue on administrative and implementation procedures and not on concept. It is your concerns about my involvement with the women’s rights that wounds me. I was too young to demonstrate at the West L.A. Federal Building.

Surprise! I have written the following published articles in favor of women’s rights: “Title IX, Have your Heard,” “At What Price Equity” and “Gender Equity in Women’s Volleyball Kills College Volleyball.” These articles state, in brief, “your daughter has the same rights to athletic scholarships as my son.” You will find these articles and annotations by other writers still available for reading on the Internet. Robert Briggs, representing college presidents from private, liberal arts Division III colleges, is one author who has written a thoughtful annotation of my articles under the title of “Softening Up Title IX.” Likewise that article can be found on the Internet.

And that is all I have to say.

    Tom Fakehany
