PCH lane closures
One lane in each direction on Pacific Coast Highway from Pena Creek to Big Rock Drive will be closed from June 13 at 9 a.m. to June 15 at 3 p.m. The California Department of Transportation is doing repairs to remove a protrusion from the road. Some of the work began this week.
U.S. Senate committee advances bill to give feds LNG authority
Last week, the U.S. Senate’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee advanced a bill for a full Senate vote that would give the federal government final say on whether liquefied natural gas facilities can be built off the nation’s coasts. The House of Representatives already approved a similar bill last month.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has said he supports the state governments being the final authority on this matter. At least two LNG plants are proposed for locations near Malibu.
Operation smile to host fundraiser
Operation Smile is hosting an event at 7 p.m. on June 3 at the Sunset Restaurant, located at 6800 Westward Beach Road. The gala event will be hosted by the Malibu High School chapter and feature the school’s Funk Band, guest appearances and a three-course meal. Tickets are $100 and all proceeds are to benefit Operation Smile International. Operation Smile is a volunteer network that offers free reconstructive surgery to children and young adults. Little League closing day
The Malibu Little League season comes to an end on Saturday with activities taking place all day at Malibu Bluffs Park.
At 10:30 a.m., the all-star games will be played. The Little League managers will then take on the 12-year-old players at 3 p.m. Closing ceremonies will take place at 5 p.m. This will be followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and an outdoor movie at 8 p.m. There will be popcorn, cotton candy and hot chocolate provided during the movie.
Storytelling at Our Lady of Malibu
“Time and Again,” an improvisational storytelling co-production with Locked Up in Malibu, will take place at Our Lady of Malibu Church on Saturday at 8 p.m. Four African-American elders will tell their stories and Locked Up in Malibu performers will respond with improvisations based on the stories. Conversation and food will follow the performance.
The church is located at 3625 Winter Canyon. Tickets cost $10.
Art show for Hunger Awareness Day
Westside Food Bank will host a show of mixed media art from local artists and students on June 7-10 at the Ken Edwards Center, located at 1527 Fourth St. in Santa Monica. The show is entitled: “Hunger: How aware are you?” Several local artists and students have contributed pieces. They were asked to reflect on the question, “What does hunger look like to you?”
A bin will be at the site for canned food donations. Parking is available in the Ken Edwards Center parking structure. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
