I love it when Malibu political contenders forget they fibbed to us in the past. When I was growing up I had a buddy who was a compulsive liar. He would make up stuff all the time; he just couldn’t help himself. Once, several of us Catholic boys were talking about experiences we had in church. He told us how the priest had burned his ears with the candles used for the ritual blessings. One of my other friends pointed out that the candles used for the ceremony were never lit. Red-faced and embarrassed, he suddenly remembered a pressing engagement. Like I said, he just couldn’t help himself.
Several of the contenders running for Malibu City Council cannot help themselves. Fibbing may have caught up with at least one contender, Walter Keller, the former icon of Malibu, and distorted his memory. The way I recall it, Mayor Keller voted NO on the free gift of the ball fields at Malibu Bluffs Park. Mayor Keller voted NO on financial aid from the city of Malibu to the school district. Mayor Keller voted NO on six private residents at Trancas in exchange for the already-permitted 38 condominiums. Trial got us 38 condominiums.
Mayor Keller voted NO on the reopening of Kanan-Dume Road. Jeff Jennings saved the day. Mayor Keller voted NO to the Malibu City Attorney’s recommendations for a legal rent control. The courts gave us a legal rent control. Mayor Keller voted NO on the existing LCP, and the State of California gave us Sara Wan. Mr. Keller voted NO, NO, NO, so Malibuites voted NO on Mr. Keller.
Walter, what makes you think Malibuites would change their vote and give you the chance to once again turn our neighborhoods into a battle ground? To once again turn youth against seniors, renters against landowners and parents against local government. While our current city council is not a “dream team,” it is superior to when the Keller family ran the city. Walter, was it you or Van Horn that said The Malibu Times sucked and was full of trash?
