I wouldn’t even kill a bug but as far as Malibu is concerned, I’m a criminal. I’ve been skating for 35 years and will die with my skate in my hand before I let the law stop me.
Unless Malibu provides mountain roads exclusively for skateboarding and decent skate parks every 500 feet throughout this town, this law isn’t fair. Kids don’t have cars to get to skate parks or anywhere else. It’s also a sad thing that Malibu lacks a quality cement skate park like every other city. Why punish thousands of these healthy kids, teens, and some of us 40 year olds for having an identity in a unique culture that is known as the California lifestyle?
I’m pretty sure most of us here in this town would agree that skateboarding is more rewarding, creative, expressive and productive than vandalizing, reckless driving, fighting, burglary, loitering, drugs, etc. Just imagine what all of us displaced and bored people are going to do with all our free time if we aren’t preoccupied on a skate?
You can’t expect us to drop our skates for tea parties, bingo, or lawn bowling. I don’t remember voting on this issue. It’s time for the skaters to stand up and be counted. This will reveal the snobby anti-skating minority. This law is no different than taking the wings from a bird. Why not make surfing illegal while you are at it? Walking down the street should be illegal.
