Be creative, Malibu! Pacific Coast Highway is our essential lifeline and a dangerous monster. Your ingenuity is urgently needed! Recently I returned to Malibu from Durham, North Carolina. We moved to Durham after 41 years of living on Big Rock Drive. I’ve made dozens of PCH trips: commuting, PTA, Little League, Township Council, cityhood rallies. What I had come to accept now scares me as grotesquely dangerous.
Speeds were way over the posted 45 mph. Aggression was rampant. Intense faces showed attention centered on cell phones. Cars whizzed inches on the highway side of the unmarked interface from people carrying out needed tasks along the margin.
Somebody reading this will suffer a great tragedy unless we can come up with creative help. Caltrans, so valiant in emergencies, is tied up in bureaucracy in less urgent times. CHP and our Sheriff are torn between being good friends and guarding of the law and our safety. Both would benefit from the forceful expressions of need, the ingenuity, the drive of Malibu’s very capable citizens.
Do it! Don’t wait until our half-lifeline, half-monster highway takes someone dear to you!
