Letter to the Editor

In response to “Blog: Our national anthem” published on Oct. 12.

No! We cannot scrap “The Star Spangled Banner!” I’m terribly sorry God did not grant you the ability to sing—especially when he seems to have made you a colossal jerk!

Yes, we are missing the issue. First off, the “monuments”: we can’t change and should not change history. I was born and raised in New Orleans, La.; we celebrated and respected the great men (Lee, Jackson, Jefferson, etc.) who served our country.

The NFL has a lot of nerve. If it wasn’t for “USA,” they wouldn’t have a job. We celebrate these men like they are saints. However, if not for football, they would be working for minimum wage.

I would like to know if Burt Ross has ever served in the military. I think you just insulted the men and women who keep this country safe so people like you can sit back and write your (I guess) editorial, “whatever” it was. Instead, you should thank God for each day you are privileged to live in this great country of ours.

This letter is being written by hand (I do not own a computer, nor email). I am 82 years old, a product of World War II. My husband served in Korea. My father, uncle and cousins all served in WWII. I love my country. I honor and revere our military. When I see our flag and stand for our national anthem, I am always filled with pride, faith and gratitude. I’m happy to be a very small part of this great country.

Ross, you better be glad you can stand, criticize and voice your stupid opinion without fear of consequence. I could list many countries where this is not possible.

I have never before written a letter to anyone like this. However, I was so upset over that so-called “editorial,” I called the paper and a very lovely young lady convinced me to voice my opinion.

I will close for now. I have two great passions—our country (military) and animals. I doubt this is going to change anything. At least it has made me feel better.

I would say respectfully, but that really isn’t true.
